Main Building- The construction of the main building, which is a heritage building, was completed in 1941 by Sir Walter Sykes George. This principal façade which faces South – a deliberate decision due to climatic considerations—achieves a fine balance of horizontal and vertical elements; the horizontal effect is achieved through the long arcades, the brick work pattern and the white stone-string courses which run at different levels, and the vertical element is achieved through the central tower and the chattris at either sides of the building. The main façade is devoid of elaborate ornamentation except for the small vents with jaali screens and an occasional five-pointed Star of India, in brick.
A fine piece of architecture, it houses some of the important spaces in college such as the Library, College Hall, Principal’s Office, and Dining Hall, besides classrooms and tutorial rooms. This elegant red-brick building, built around four spacious courts, carrying subtle Mughal motifs is not only an ornament of the city, but is also a permanent and substantial witness of God’s faithfulness to the generations of people who worked tirelessly for the glory of God.

As you may know, the College crest represents the martyr’s crown on the field of martyrs’ red within a five-pointed star edged with Cambridge blue, the latter representing the impact of Christian Cambridge upon India. The martyr's crown in gold awaits the person who will give his life for truth. The Chapel- The College Chapel is a quaint and revered space for quiet meditation and spiritual reflection for all, without distinction, in college. The Chapel was designed by the architect Walter Sykes George and constructed in the year 1952. The freestanding Chapel, which is located at the north of campus, is an architectural beauty with the main façade carrying two broken pediments with circular motifs at the edges, and the main structure adorned with white-stone string courses and Delhi quartzite climbing upto the arch of the entrance doorway; the overall design of the Chapel has some curious similarities with the Gate of Virtue at Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge. The interior of the College Chapel is rather simple with two fluted Doric columns supporting a serliana.
Further, the current Chapel bell had its existence from 1842 and was brought in all the way from Guiseley in Yorkshire in the year 1954. In the Chapel is reinterred the remains of the remains of Revd Samuel Scott Allnutt, the founder Principal of College(1881- 1889) in 1979.

INFORMATION

St. Stephen’s College is a Christian minority educational institution established for the advancement of sound learning and all-around development of its members. Founded on 1st February 1881 by the Cambridge Mission, St. Stephen’s College is the oldest college in Delhi. The College is currently affiliated with the University of Delhi, of which it was one of the first three constituent Colleges.

With a humble beginning of about five students and three teachers, the College which was initially housed in a small space in Katra Kushal Rai near Kinari Bazar in Chandni Chowk was shifted to Kashmere Gate in 1891, before it was finally moved to its present location in the University Campus in 1941. The Founder’s Day of St.Stephen’s College is observed annually on the 7th of December to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Revd Samuel Scott Allnutt, who was the Founder and first Principal of the College. The Foundation Day of College is celebrated on 1st February every year.

St. Stephen’s College, which is named after the first martyr of the Christian church, has its motto in Latin: ‘Ad Dei Gloriam’ which means ‘To the Glory of God’. The College motto embodies the essential values upon which the foundation of the institution is laid: values of excellence and service.

For over well more than a century, St.Stephen's College has fostered individuals excelling in all avenues of knowledge at national and international levels through its commitment to discipline and holistic learning. The College also pays significant emphasis on sustaining multi-cultural diversity with members from various locations across the country and the world.

This virtual tour is a sneak peek into one of the prestigious institutions in India which may mean a walk down the memory lane for former students and a joy for the current and future bearers of the Stephanian tradition.
